National Highways update: Lighting upgrades A64 York and North Yorkshire
National Highways are upgrading street lighting to energy-efficient LEDs at A64 locations near York and across North Yorkshire. This will reduce energy use, carbon emissions, and future maintenance needs.
They'll be working at the following locations:
- A64 Fulford slip roads
- A64 Grimston Bar slip roads and roundabout
- A64 Hopgrove Roundabout and either side of the junction
- A64 Malton slip roads
To carry out the work safely, overnight closures (8pm–6am) will be in place. These will be a mix of lane closures and full carriageway closures.
- 3 November: No exit/entry from Grimston Bar Interchange to Hull Road and Elvington Lane
Diversions via A64 and local authority routes - 4 November: Grimston Bar westbound bridge deck closure: no access from Grimston Bar westbound to Hull Road westbound heading into York.
Diversion via A64 and turn around at Fulford Interchange - 5 November: Grimston Bar eastbound bridge deck full closure: no access from Grimston Bar eastbound to A166 Stamford Bridge Road and A1079 Hull Road eastbound.
Diversion via A64 and turn around at Hopgrove Interchange - 6 November: No exit or entry from Grimston Bar Interchange to Stamford Bridge Road.
Diversion via: A166; A614; A1079 - 7 November: Old Malton westbound exit and entry slip full closures.
Diversions via A64 - 8 November: Full closure A64 eastbound Grimston Bar to Hopgrove.
Diversion via A1079 Hull Road; A1036 Foss Islands Road; A1036 Heworth Green; A1036 Malton Road - 9 November: Full closure A64 Hopgrove Interchange – North Lane eastbound
Diversion via A64; A1237; A19; A170; A169 - 12 November: Full closure: North Lane – A64 Hopgrove Interchange westbound.
Diversion via A64 and local authority routes - 13 November: Full closure A64 Hopgrove Interchange to Grimston Bar westbound.
Diversion via A1036 Malton Road; A1036 Foss Islands Road; A1079 Hull Road - 14 November: Lane closures on Hopgrove Interchange ring road.
- 17 November: Grimston Bar eastbound exit and entry slip closures.
Diversion via A64 - 18 November: Grimston Bar westbound exit and entry slip closures.
Diversion via A64 - 19 November: Grimston Bar – overnight lane closures.
- 20 November: Grimston Bar – overnight lane closures.
- 22 November: Fulford eastbound exit and entry slip closures.
Diversions via A64 - 23 November: Fulford westbound exit and entry slip closures.
Diversions via A64 - 26 November: Old Malton eastbound exit and entry slip full closures.

These diversion routes have been agreed with the local authorities and need to be suitable for all types of vehicles, including HGVs.
